Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed in a statement announcing the deal.

RALEIGH, NC - Early-stage life science companies have long grumbled about the ability to secure financing and those grumbles have only grown louder given the market conditions that have dried up many financing options.The state of North Carolina will now provide another way for life science companies to slake their thirst for capital. State Treasurer Janet Cowell will invest up to $35 million from the state’s pension fund to support early-stage life science companies in the state. Cowell formally announced the “Accelerator” at the Southeast BIO Investor Forum in Durham, North Carolina today.

WINSTOM-SALEM, NC - Cathtek, a medical device maker, is planning to relocate to the former Curly’s Harley-Davidson dealership on Reidsville Road in Winston-Salem.
The company, which is based in the Piedmont Triad Research Park in downtown, has applied to have the dealership property rezoned from highway business to general business, according to the Winston-Salem Journal.

TAMPA, FL - The life sciences industry in Florida is flourishing, despite challenges.
That’s the message Dr. Michael Schmitt, life science analyst and editor of the Florida BioDatabase, brought to the inventors, investors and other life science professionals gathered in Tampa for the annual conference of BioFlorida.
There are 171 biotech companies in the state, up 26 percent since 2008, said Schmitt, citing new data he hadn’t yet had time to post on the database. About 25 percent of them are in the Tampa Bay area.

The Miami-based biotechnology and pharmaceutical company (NYSE: OPK) said Claros “presents an ideal strategic fit.”
Opko said it is developing unique antibody based tests for early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease; Parkinson’s disease; and lung, pancreatic and other cancers.
“The combined Opko-Claros technology will also provide an ideal platform for use as companion diagnostics,” the company stated.
Last month, Opko Health signed a deal to sell its ophthalmic instrumentation business to OPTOS for $17.5 million, plus future royalties.
Opko shares were down 13 cents to $4.68 in morning trading. The 52-week high was $5.03 on Feb. 16. The 52-week low was $2.41 on Oct. 18, 2010.
