Drug discovery firm Scynexis raises $5.5M

DURHAM, NC - Eleven-year-old, venture-backed drug discovery company Scynexis Inc. has raised $5.5 million, or 36 percent, of a targeted $15 million stock and debt offering to investors.

Nine investors have taken part in the offering to date, the first says in a new filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Pandora Genomics LLC wins seed-capital contest

ORLANDO, FL - A Central Florida initiative to support local entrepreneurs has selected two high-technology companies as the winners of its first $200,000 seed-capital sweepstakes.

The Florida IDEA Grant Program chose Pandora Genomics LLC of Orlando and Rillip Inc. of Edgewater to receive grants of as much as ,000 each.

The companies — one a biotech startup, the other an online data-mining firm — will also receive in-kind services such as accounting, marketing and legal assistance valued at as much as ,000 each, program officials said this week.

N.C. ‘Accelerator’ to invest $35M in early-stage life science companies

RALEIGH, NC - Early-stage life science companies have long grumbled about the ability to secure financing and those grumbles have only grown louder given the market conditions that have dried up many financing options.The state of North Carolina will now provide another way for life science companies to slake their thirst for capital. State Treasurer Janet Cowell will invest up to $35 million from the state’s pension fund to support early-stage life science companies in the state. Cowell formally announced the “Accelerator” at the Southeast BIO Investor Forum in Durham, North Carolina today.

CORAL GABLES, FL - Coral Gables-based Catalyst Pharmaceutical Partners said it plans to launch a $3.5 million stock offering, but its share price reacted negatively after the announcement.

The developmental-stage company (NASDAQ: CPRX) said it would sell 3.05 million shares of its common stock plus warrants to purchase an additional 1.52 million shares of its common stock. The price is $1.15 a share.
