Ten Semifinalists Selected in SEBIO’s Fifth Annual BIO/Plan Competition

Filed under: SEBIO News — admin @ 3:15 pm

Atlanta, GA -Southeast BIO announced that it has selected ten semifinalists in its fifth annual BIO/Plan Competition. Established to promote the creation of new life science companies and the development of exceptional corporate partnering opportunities in the Southeast U.S., the BIO/Plan Competition targets technology transfer offices and entrepreneurs throughout the region to bring forward opportunities from leading Southeastern research universities and centers.

The ten semifinalists were selected from more than 40 total applications. The applicant pool included applications from 8 states - Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. Half of the semifinalist projects are in the medical device space and the remaining technologies include small molecule therapeutics, biologics, and diagnostics.

“We were particularly pleased with the pool of BIO/Plan applicants this year in terms of the quality of the underlying technologies and the potential for further development either as new commercial enterprises or within corporate partnerships,” says Frank Hunt, BIO/Plan 2011 Co-Chair and CEO of PNP Therapeutics. “The ten semifinalists are giving us a look at some of the best opportunities in the region for new products that will have a significant impact on the health care of tomorrow.”

Five of the semifinalists selected are from Georgia and two are from Florida. North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia are also represented in the semi-finals. The technologies emerged from some of the region’s finest research institutions, including Emory University, Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Florida, University of Georgia, University of Miami, University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill, University of Tennessee, and University of Virginia.

Each semifinalist is now paired with a team of experienced professionals to begin the mentorship phase of the Competition. Mentoring teams include professionals from active venture funds or angel groups, biotech entrepreneurs and managers, and service providers with relevant start-up expertise. The teams interact directly with the semifinalists over a 3-month period to focus on the strategic development of the business concept and commercial opportunity. Additional resources including development plan templates and guidelines, regulatory consultants, and presentation guidelines and examples help support the teams. This rigorous mentorship process is the cornerstone of the Competition and the semifinalists walk away with an executable development strategy and associated written plan.

Following the mentoring process, each semifinalist submits their written development plan for judging and four finalists are selected to present at the Thirteenth Annual SEBIO Investor Forum (SEBIO 2011), November 2-3, 2011, in Durham, NC. The winner will be announced at the Closing Luncheon on November 3.

The theme for SEBIO 2011, Data Driven Deals, will highlight the well known fact that data drives grants, corporate partnerships, investments and exits. Home to one of the largest concentrations of CROs in the world and a leader in the biotechnology industry, North Carolina is well positioned to host the Southeast region’s preeminent investment conference.
