ATLANTA, GA - TearScience Inc., a Morrisville, NC-based medical device company, announced Monday it has received FDA approval to market and sell its treatment for evaporative dry eye.
The LipiFlow treatment, which removes meibomian gland obstructions — a dysfunction linked to all forms of dry eye — is available immediately on a limited basis.
“We are gratified and blessed to have secured FDA clearance for the LipiFlow,” said Tim Willis, chief executive officer and co-founder of TearScience, in a written statement. “This marks an important day for ophthalmologists as now our advanced technology is available for their dry eye patients.”
TearScience’s LipiFlow is an outpatient procedure that takes about 30 minutes to administer in a doctor’s office.
TearScience, which employs about 30 people, has raised about $60 million in venture capital since being founded in 2005. It was rolling out its dry eye treatment in Canada and Europe earlier this year.
