Program Promotes New, Venture-Attractive Life Sciences Companies in the Southeast

Atlanta, GA – – Southeast BIO (SEBIO), a regional
nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering the growth of the Southeast’s life sciences industry, announced today its second annual BIO/Plan Competition. The year-long program has been designed and developed to help promote the creation of new, venture-attractive life science companies based in the Southeast. Working closely with tech transfer offices and entrepreneurs throughout the region, the competition pulls opportunities forward from our region’s research universities, research centers and experienced entrepreneurs.

Here is how the BIO/Plan Competition works:

• Investigators/entrepreneurs will first complete a short application outlining their concept and the opportunity. By virtue of the application and selection process, Applicants will gain exposure to the venture capital, technology transfer and life sciences industry support communities.

• A selection committee will then choose approximately 10 Semifinalists and pair each with a team of mentors, which will include professionals from active venture funds, entrepreneurs, and service providers with relevant start-up expertise, to further develop the concept over a several month period and surround it with a first-class business plan.

• The finished plans will be submitted to a panel of experts and approximately 4 Finalists will be selected. The Finalists will present their plans to the full conference audience at the 2008 SEBIO Investor Forum and a winner will be chosen. The winner will be awarded a substantial prize (valued at $100,000 in cash and services) with which to launch the enterprise and implement their business plan.

Details about the BIO/Plan Competition as well as the application, rules and eligibility requirements can be found on the SEBIO site, http://www.sebio.org/bioplan/. THE DEADLINE TO APPLY IS MARCH 17, 2008!

SEBIO launched the BIO/Plan competition in 2007. The 2007 competition attracted more than fifty applicants from Georgia, Florida, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. Last November, the winner, Triptcor Pharmaceuticals, a pre-incorporated technology to be spun-out of Emory University, was announced.

“The inaugural year of BIO/Plan in 2007 was a tremendous success,” says Phillip Street, partner with Kilpatrick Stockton and Chair of SEBIO. “We look forward to building on the momentum of last year’s competition to attract the most promising emerging technologies in the region and spur the creation of fundable companies.”
