Micell Technologies raises $7M
RALEIGH, NC—Micell Technologies, a biomedical company developing new ways to deliver drugs via medical devices such as stents, has raised $7 million from Invemed Catalyst Fund and GE Pension Plan.
Micell Chief Technology Officer James McClain confirmed the funding.
Founded in 2001, Micell is developing surface and polymer modification technologies for medical device and drug delivery applications focused on improving current drug-eluting methods. Drug-eluting coatings release drugs over time.
Drug-eluting stents (metal stents coated with a polymer/drug combination address the mechanical issues of holding a vessel open with a metal stent, while locally delivering drugs that reduce restenosis (re-narrowing) to the vessel wall.
Additional combination products in the orthopedic, ophthalmic, wound healing, and drug delivery areas are currently in development.
New technologies providing improvements to current coating processes for drugs-devices, drug-drug and drug-biologic combinations have the ability to enhance the development of these products, Micell says.
Micell’s surface modification technology provides several unique capabilities for modifying and coating bio-medical devices with advanced polymers and drugs.
